He received his PhD from Northwestern University (1984) and has held positions at the University of Minnesota, Cambridge University, and Stanford University. Marimon's research centers on macroeconomic theory with applications to European policy challenges. His work integrates monetary theory, contract theory, and learning dynamics to address issues like credit crises, sovereign debt, and pandemic recovery. Recent publications demonstrate a consistent focus on institutional design and policy coordination within the European framework.
Analysis of his publication trends reveals deep engagement with real-world crises: early work on theoretical foundations of monetary policy evolved into direct policy contributions during the Eurozone crisis and COVID-19 pandemic. His research consistently bridges abstract modeling and actionable European economic governance solutions.
His scientific recognition includes:
- Fellow of the Econometric Society
- Fellow of the European Economic Association
- Research Fellow of CEPR
- Research Fellow of NBER
Marimon co-founded UPF (1990) and established CREi (Centre for Research in International Economics) in 1994, serving as its acting Director. These institutions became pillars of Barcelona's economics ecosystem, fostering research on European integration and macroeconomic policy. His leadership extended to directing EUI's Max Weber Programme (2006–2013) and shaping Spain's science policy as Secretary of State.
