Ramesh Gupta is a senior researcher in the Superconducting Magnet Division at Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL). His work focuses on innovative superconducting magnet designs for particle accelerators, with significant contributions to major projects including RHIC (Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider), NSLS-II (National Synchrotron Light Source II), and EIC (Electron Ion Collider).
His research expertise encompasses superconducting magnet design, accelerator physics, high-temperature superconductors, field quality optimization, and magnet R&D methodologies. Gupta pioneered several groundbreaking magnet designs including the Common Coil Design, Overpass/Underpass (Cloverleaf) Design, Open Midplane Dipole Design, and Optimum Integral Design. His development of tuning shim techniques achieved unprecedented field quality levels in accelerator magnets, with applications in RHIC and EIC projects.
Recent publications demonstrate a strong trend toward high-field magnet technologies using Nb3Sn superconductors and HTS (High Temperature Superconductors), focusing on cost-effective, rapid-turn-around R&D approaches. His innovative DCC017 test facility enables systematic studies of magnet technologies while supporting high-risk, high-reward innovations.
Gupta's work on RHIC magnets established new standards for field quality in accelerator magnets, with techniques that reduced field errors by an order of magnitude. His flexible design approach allowed production of high-quality magnets without extensive prototyping, significantly reducing costs and schedules for major accelerator projects.
He has developed and demonstrated numerous magnet technologies including HTS for fusion applications, react & wind high-field magnets with brittle superconductors, and specialized designs for muon colliders. His contributions to field quality monitoring and production techniques have influenced magnet programs worldwide.
