Ram Nataraja is a Professor in the Department of Paediatrics at Monash University and serves as a Paediatric Surgical Consultant at Monash Children's Hospital (MCH). He is the founder of Monash Children’s Simulation (MCS), established in 2015, and has delivered over 500 educational activities to more than 5,000 participants globally. His work focuses on simulation-based education (SBE), minimally invasive paediatric surgery, and educational reform in low- and middle-income countries.

Ram Nataraja’s research spans clinical, global health, and educational domains. He has pioneered low-cost simulation models for paediatric surgery, aiming to democratize access to high-impact educational tools. His projects with the World Health Organisation (WHO), Royal Australasian College of Surgeons, and Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh highlight his commitment to global surgical education reform. His recent publications emphasize pain management in infants, vascular access device complications, and healthcare equity in low-resource settings.
Notable scientific awards include the Vice Chancellor’s Award for Excellence Innovations in Learning and Teaching (2020), Excellence in Research Enterprise (2024), and the Society for Simulation in Healthcare’s Article of Influence (2020). He has also received recognition for best presentations and abstracts at conferences in 2009, 2018, and 2023.
Nataraja leads international initiatives such as the Pacific Islands Virtual Online Training in Surgery (PIVOTS) and collaborates with the WHO to deliver remote surgical education programs in Papua New Guinea. His lab, Monash Children’s Simulation, is a hub for inter-professional learning and innovative surgical training, including virtual and home-based laparoscopic programs.
