Ralph Richter is a Researcher at the Leibniz Institute for Research on Society and Space (IRS), working in the Research Area "Economy and Civil Society." He conducts research on Social Innovation, Social Enterprises, and changes in urban and rural life worlds. Additionally, he serves as a visiting lecturer in Urban and Regional Sociology at Hochschule Neubrandenburg, Technische Universität Berlin, and Brandenburg University of Technology Cottbus-Senftenberg.
Dr. Richter completed his doctoral studies at Universität Leipzig in 2011 with a thesis on "Place-based Identity as Endogenous Resource in Shrinking Cities." His academic background includes studies in Sociology and Communication and Media Science at Universität Leipzig and University of Naples Federico II (1996-2003).
Richter's research focuses on social innovation processes in rural contexts, examining how social enterprises function as embedded intermediaries that connect rural communities with supra-regional networks. His work explores the dynamics of innovation in structurally weak regions, the role of key players in rural social innovation, and the impact of digitalization on rural volunteering. He investigates how local innovations emerge in challenging environments and how rural communities can leverage endogenous resources for development.
His recent publications reveal a strong emphasis on understanding regional innovation ecosystems in structurally weak areas, particularly through the SOIR (Social Open Innovation Region) framework. Richter's work bridges theoretical perspectives with practical applications, examining municipal promotion of volunteering, rural volunteerism in the digital age, and sustainable logistics systems in urban settings.
Dr. Richter is an active member of the German Sociological Association (DGS) and its Section for "Urban and Regional Sociology," regularly presenting his research at national and international conferences. His collaborative projects often involve interdisciplinary teams working on issues of rural development, social innovation, and regional transformation.

Dr. Richter maintains strong connections with academic institutions through his visiting lecturer positions and has previously held research positions at Universität Leipzig (2003-2005) and Technische Universität Darmstadt (2011-2014). His research often involves collaboration with practitioners and policymakers to bridge the gap between academic research and practical implementation in rural development contexts.
