Ralf Metzler

Ralf Metzler is a full Professor in Theoretical Physics at the University of Potsdam's Institute of Physics & Astronomy. His academic journey includes postdoctoral work at Tel Aviv University and MIT, followed by appointments at NORDITA, the University of Ottawa (as Canada Research Chair), Technical University of Munich, and Tampere University of Technology. He has also held distinguished visiting positions at Wroclaw University of Science and Technology and the Asia Pacific Center for Theoretical Physics.

Research Focus: The Metzler group specializes in modeling diffusive transport in complex environments, spanning molecular-scale biochemical signaling to large-scale ecological systems. Key themes include anomalous diffusion driven by diverse physical mechanisms, non-Gaussian stochastic processes, and trajectory-to-trajectory fluctuations in heterogeneous systems like cells, membranes, and groundwater aquifers. Their work combines probabilistic approaches, simulations, and collaborations with experimental single-particle tracking groups.

Research Tools: The group develops classical statistical observables alongside advanced Bayesian and deep learning techniques for data analysis. They also explore crowding effects and environmental heterogeneity in passive and active soft matter systems.
