Ralf Metzler is a Professor of Theoretical Physics at the University of Potsdam, Germany. He previously held positions at the Technical University of Munich, the University of Ottawa (as Canada Research Chair in Biological Physics), and the Nordic Institute for Theoretical Physics (NORDITA). He earned his PhD in Physics from the University of Ulm in 1996, followed by postdoctoral work at Tel Aviv University and MIT.
His research focuses on nonequilibrium statistical physics and anomalous stochastic processes, particularly in biological and soft matter systems. Notable contributions include studies on protein diffusion mechanisms and water dynamics around proteins.
He received the American Physical Society's Outstanding Referee Award (2009) and remains an Alexander von Humboldt Polish Honorary Research Fellow. His work bridges theoretical physics with applications in biophysics, emphasizing noise-driven phenomena and complex systems.
