معرفی
Ralf Littke is a Professor at RWTH Aachen University, affiliated with the Faculty of Georesources and Materials Engineering, where he heads the Institute of Geology, Geochemistry and Deposits of Petroleum and Coal. He has held leadership roles including Dean of Faculty 5 and Senator at RWTH Aachen. His career includes research at Jülich Research Center and academic training at Ruhr University Bochum, where he earned his doctorate and completed his habilitation.
His research focuses on organic petrology of coal, sedimentary basin dynamics, and hydrocarbon systems. He has made foundational contributions through the DFG Priority Program 1135 on Sedimentary Basin Dynamics, which unified German expertise and led to the influential Springer volume Dynamics of Complex Intracontinental Basins (2008). His work spans sequence stratigraphy, petrophysics, organic geochemistry, and basin modeling, with applications across global sedimentary basins.
With over 600 publications and more than 21,000 citations (h-index: 71), his research has significantly advanced subsurface understanding, particularly in northern Germany. He has successfully bridged academia and industry through numerous third-party funded projects involving public and industrial partners, promoting internationalization in petroleum and coal research.
Scientific Awards and Recognitions:
- Gustav-Steinmann-Medaille (2023) for outstanding achievements in geosciences
- Member, North Rhine-Westphalian Academy of Sciences
- Member, Acatech (German Academy of Science and Engineering)
- Chair, Scientific Advisory Board of GFZ Potsdam (2011–2013)
- Chair, Geological Association (2011–2014)
- Editor of multiple scientific journals
Ralf Littke has supervised over 70 doctoral candidates and countless students who now lead careers in geosciences globally. He has secured and managed more than 30 major research projects funded by DFG, EU, BMBF, and industry. His integrative leadership was pivotal in merging German geological societies into the unified DGGV. He has also contributed to national and international scientific policy through roles in the DFG Geocommission and advisory boards.
He has led large collaborative efforts such as the DFG Priority Program 1135, which fostered interdisciplinary networks and enabled access to vast industrial datasets for academic research. His work continues to influence energy resource evaluation, basin evolution modeling, and sustainable subsurface use.
