Dr Rajendra Chitnis is an Associate Professor in Czech at the University of Oxford's Faculty of Medieval and Modern Languages. His research focuses on Czech, Slovak, and Russian literature from the late 19th century to the present, with particular emphasis on post-Communist transformations and rural narratives. He has authored monographs on Vladislav Vančura and post-1989 literary changes, and leads projects on translation of 'small European literatures.' Teaching areas include Czech/Slovak literature from 1800s to present, medieval Czech texts, and late Soviet Russian literature.
His AHRC-funded project (2014–2016) investigated translation dynamics of lesser-known European literatures, resulting in an edited volume and policy reports. Current work explores modernity and the countryside in Czech literature (1890s–1960s). Supervision specialties include Central European women's writing, literary medicine, and BBC wartime broadcasting.
Publications span monographs, journal articles, and edited collections, with recent work analyzing WWII-era Czech literature and post-Soviet cultural narratives. His collaborative research bridges literary analysis with socio-political contexts, emphasizing transnational literary circulation.
