Rajat Gupta is a Professor of Sustainable Architecture and Climate Change and Director of the Oxford Institute for Sustainable Development (OISD) and Low Carbon Building (LCB) Research Group at Oxford Brookes University. He holds a senior professorial chair at the highest academic level. His teaching focuses on building performance evaluation (BPE) and low carbon technologies, leading modules such as ARCH 7025 at the postgraduate level.
His research spans evaluating building performance from socio-technical perspectives, smart energy systems, and climate resilience in care settings. He has secured over £13 million in grants from UK Research Councils (EPSRC, ESRC, NERC), EU, Innovate UK, and UN, leading projects like the £1.3M EPSRC-funded RESIDE project on residential energy demand reduction in India and the Innovate UK-funded Local Energy Oxfordshire demonstrator (£13.8M).
Rajat’s awards include the RIBA President’s Award for Research (2006), multiple Dean’s Awards, and Best Paper Awards at international conferences. He supervises PhD students and examines doctoral candidates globally. His work has influenced policies, such as Public Health England’s care home overheating checklist, and contributed to tools like the DECoRuM® carbon mapping software.
Key projects include the MaS-SHIP initiative (UN-funded), which developed sustainability assessment toolkits for Indian housing, and the Learn-BPE project, creating a customized BPE protocol for India. He is a member of prestigious committees, including the EPSRC Peer Review College and the British Standards Institution (BSI) CB/401 committee on energy efficiency retrofits.
