Professor David Johnston is a Professor of Building Performance Evaluation at Leeds Beckett University, based in the Leeds Sustainability Institute within the School of Built Environment, Engineering and Computing. With over 30 years of experience, he is a leading UK expert in low carbon housing and Building Performance Evaluation (BPE), particularly in coheating testing and the building fabric thermal 'performance gap'.
His research has significantly influenced both national and European standards. He developed the Coheating Test Method, which led to the publication of two European (CEN) Standards: EN 17887-1:2024 and EN 17887-2:2024, adopted by 34 European countries. He also contributed to EN 17888-1:2024 and EN 17888-2:2024. He has held leadership roles in major standards bodies including CEN (Chair of TC89 WG13), BSI (B/540/9 and B/540/8), and CIBSE (TM23 Forum), and has been a member of the Caravan Industry Renewable Energy Working Group.
David has published over fifty peer-reviewed papers, co-authored with European experts such as Wolfgang Feist, and has guest-edited special journal issues. His work informs UK Building Regulations and European testing protocols. He regularly peer-reviews for leading construction journals and technical guidance documents.
He is actively involved in teaching subjects such as Architectural Technology, Building Services Engineering, Building Surveying, and Construction Management. His research continues to shape policy and industry practices in energy efficiency, sustainability, and building standards.
