Rajani Alexander serves as a Distinguished Fellow at the Munk School of Global Affairs & Public Policy, University of Toronto. A veteran diplomat with over 30 years of service in Global Affairs Canada and the Canadian International Development Agency, she held prominent roles including Ambassador of Canada to Guatemala and High Commissioner to Belize. Her extensive international career spanned the Southern Cone, Asia, Africa, and Central America, focusing on technology transfer, development programs, and diplomatic representation.
Her academic credentials include:
- PhD in History and Government, University of Notre Dame
- Bachelor of History (Honours), Delhi University, India
Dr. Alexander's research expertise centers on International Relations and Public Policy, with specialized focus on Gender Studies and Development Studies. She co-negotiated critical gender equality frameworks at the 1995 UN Beijing World Conference on Women, particularly addressing poverty and unpaid labor. Her professional work emphasizes performance management systems and institutional diversity initiatives, including leadership of the Executive Interchange program with the Institute for Canadian Citizenship.
Prior to diplomacy, she taught Pacific, Asian and Gender Studies at the University of Victoria, Simon Fraser University, and Carleton University, where she designed Cooperative Education programs for liberal arts disciplines. Throughout her diplomatic career, she participated in approximately one hundred foreign service recruitment processes and championed inclusive practices within Canada's diplomatic corps.
