Rainier Grutman

Rainier Grutman is a Full Professor of French and Translation Studies at the University of Ottawa's Faculty of Arts, where he has held progressively senior positions since 1995, including Chair of the French Department (2014-2015). He maintains international academic connections through visiting appointments at institutions in Belgium, Italy, and the United Kingdom.

Trained in Romance languages and literatures at universities in Namur, Leuven, and Madrid, Grutman completed his PhD in Montreal. His scholarly work spans multiple linguistic traditions as he is proficient in five languages and has been translated into Portuguese.

Grutman's research centers on the history and sociology of translation, with particular focus on 19th-century literature across France, Belgium, and Quebec. His scholarly interests include literary self-translation practices and multilingual writing traditions, examining how linguistic boundaries shape literary production.

His significant contributions to the field were recognized in 2022 with election to the prestigious Academia Europaea/Academy of Europe. Previous honors include the Gabrielle-Roy prize for literary criticism (1998) and multiple visiting professorships at leading European institutions.
