Rainer Josef Schwob

Rainer Josef Schwob is a postdoctoral researcher and Deputy Director of the Institute for the History of Musical Reception and Interpretation at the Mozarteum University Salzburg. He has been researching and teaching at the institution since 2014, with previous academic positions at the University of Vienna where he worked as a university assistant from 2013-2014. His academic career includes significant research on Mozart reception, Monteverdi studies, and interpretation research.

Dr. Schwob completed his education with a doctorate from the University of Vienna in 2004, with a dissertation on Claudio Monteverdi's 'L'incoronazione di Poppea' in the 20th century under Gernot Gruber. His academic training included studies in musicology and ancient history at Karl-Franzens-Universität Graz and the University of Vienna, with additional musical training in piano and organ at various conservatories in Austria. His educational background spans formal musical training, historical studies, and specialized musicological research.

Schwob's research focuses on interpretation research and analysis, particularly regarding W.A. Mozart, early reception of Mozart and his contemporaries, canon and repertoire formation, Monteverdi reception, music databases, Alban Berg, Ernst Krenek, arrangement techniques, and the history of piano reduction. His work bridges historical musicology with practical performance considerations, examining how musical works have been understood and performed across different historical periods. He has developed expertise in digital musicology through his work on music databases and digital editions of historical music criticism.

His scholarly output reveals consistent engagement with Mozart studies across multiple dimensions, from reception history to performance practice.
