Rainald Löhner serves as Professor in the Physics & Astronomy Department at George Mason University and Director of the Center for Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), holding dual instructional and faculty appointments within the department.
His academic credentials include:
- Dipl Ingenieur in Maschinenbau from TU Braunschweig (1982)
- Ph.D. in Civil Engineering from the University of Wales, Swansea (1985)
Research focuses on unstructured grid-based solvers for multi-physical phenomena, with core expertise in compressible/incompressible flows, electromagnetic and acoustic wave propagation, heat/mass transfer, and fluid-structure interaction. Methodological work spans grid generation, pre-processing, and parallel computing for performance optimization, design characterization, and envelope analysis.
He directs the Center for Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), which drives computational methodology development across fluid dynamics applications at George Mason University.
