Associate Professor Rahena Akhter holds a dual role as an Associate Professor and Discipline Head of Cariology at the Sydney Dental School (SDS), University of Sydney. She specializes in Preventive Dentistry, with expertise in caries management systems (CMS) and teaching in dental education programs. Her career spans institutions like Charles Sturt University and Okayama University, Japan, where she previously served as a faculty member and researcher. Dr. Akhter has been awarded multiple honors, including the 2022 Outstanding Teaching Award and the 2018 IADRANZ Investigator Award in Preventive Dentistry.
Her research focuses on high-risk populations such as children with cerebral palsy, pregnant women, and elderly patients, addressing oral health’s systemic links (e.g., cardiovascular disease, diabetes). Notable projects include investigating caries risk factors in cerebral palsy patients and the association between oral health and physical fitness in regional Australian elderly. She has published over 60 peer-reviewed articles and secured grants from bodies like the Equity Seed Grant and Wrigley Community Foundation.
