She also serves as a Senior Researcher at the Peace Research Institute Oslo (PRIO) and Deputy Editor of the Journal of Peace Research. Her work focuses on political violence, particularly conflict-related sexual and gender-based violence, repression dynamics, and the intersection of religion and intrastate conflict. Nordås co-created the Sexual Violence and Armed Conflict (SVAC) dataset, a globally recognized resource for studying wartime violence.
She holds a Ph.D. and M.A. in Political Science from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology. Her research has been funded by the National Science Foundation, the Norwegian Research Council, and others. Key awards include the Young Research Talent Grant (2016-2020) from Norway’s Research Council for her project on conflict-related sexual violence dynamics. Nordås has held visiting fellowships at Harvard Kennedy School and the University of Notre Dame.
Her research spans themes like climate change and conflict, demographic factors in violence, and the societal impacts of wartime trauma. She emphasizes empirical rigor and policy relevance, often collaborating with international organizations to bridge academic insights with real-world interventions.
Nordås’s recent work examines public perceptions of sexual violence, the role of militias in perpetrating violence, and the long-term effects of conflict on gender relations. She advocates for survivor-centered approaches in peacebuilding and legal accountability mechanisms.
