Raghuram G Rajan is the Katherine Dusak Miller Distinguished Service Professor of Finance at the University of Chicago Booth School of Business. Previously, he served as the 23rd Governor of the Reserve Bank of India from September 2013 to September 2016 and as Chief Economist and Director of Research at the International Monetary Fund from 2003 to 2006. Currently, he also serves as Chairman of the Group of Thirty, Chairman of the Per Jacobsson Foundation, senior economic advisor to BDT&MSD, managing director at Andersen Tax, and member of advisory boards at PIMCO and RLUSD.
Rajan's research focuses on banking, corporate finance, and economic development. His work explores the complex relationships between financial systems, government policy, and economic growth. He has investigated how financial development affects long-term investment, how liquidity functions in banking systems, and how sovereign debt impacts economic development in different contexts. His research often bridges theoretical models with empirical evidence from historical events and contemporary financial crises.
Analysis of Rajan's recent publications reveals a consistent focus on the intersection of finance, policy, and economic development. His work spans central banking operations, sovereign debt dynamics, climate resilience through financial systems, and corporate governance structures. A notable trend is his examination of how financial systems mediate responses to economic shocks, whether from climate events, pandemics, or policy changes. His research often challenges conventional wisdom, such as demonstrating how central bank balance sheet expansions may not always improve systemic liquidity as commonly assumed.
