Rafi Sofer is an Assistant Professor in the Music Production and Engineering (MP&E) department at Berklee College of Music, where he contributes his extensive industry experience to music education. As a seasoned engineer, producer, musician, and photographer, he brings a holistic and pragmatic approach to teaching, grounded in over 25 years of real-world record production.
His expertise spans music production, audio engineering, and creative performance development, with a strong emphasis on empowering students to innovate beyond technical proficiency. Sofer believes that skills like professional writing and punctuality are deeply connected to artistic discipline and long-term project success in music.
Throughout his career, Sofer has recorded with prominent artists such as Ed Sheeran, James Taylor, Melissa Ferrick, Mission of Burma, Tanya Donelly, and Fountains of Wayne. He also toured with Juliana Hatfield as a front-of-house sound engineer, demonstrating his versatility across studio and live environments.
At Q Division Studios, where he served as chief engineer for nearly 15 years, Sofer oversaw the restoration of a historic Neve console and the construction of two state-of-the-art recording spaces. He designed the studio’s internship program, which blends traditional discipline with modern production techniques and has launched numerous successful audio professionals.
