Raffael Fasel is an Assistant Professor in Public Law at the University of Cambridge and Fellow of Jesus College. He specializes in constitutional theory, human rights law, and animal rights law, with significant research funding from the Swiss National Science Foundation. Previously, he was a Fellow in Law at the London School of Economics and has held visiting positions at Yale Law School, Harvard Law School, University of Oxford, and NYU Law School.
Dr. Fasel's educational background includes a Bachelor and Master of Law from the University of Fribourg (summa cum laude), an MA in Philosophy from University College London, an LLM from Yale Law School (with straight Honors on a Fulbright scholarship), and a PhD in Law from the University of Cambridge (awarded the Yorke Prize for exceptional quality).
His research focuses on constitutional theory, particularly constituent power, comparative constitutional law, human and animal rights law, and jurisprudence. His work spans intellectual history and contemporary legal philosophy, exploring how constitutional frameworks can evolve to address emerging ethical challenges, particularly regarding non-human animals. His current research project, 'Containing the People: Constitution-making After Popular Will,' examines the concept of constituent power from multiple disciplinary perspectives.
Dr. Fasel's publications appear in leading journals including the Oxford Journal of Legal Studies, Modern Law Review, and International Journal of Constitutional Law, with popular writing in the Times Literary Supplement. His work has been covered by major media outlets including BBC, The Times, and The Irish Times.

Dr. Fasel co-founded and serves as Co-Director of the Cambridge Centre for Animal Rights Law and is an Associate Fellow of the Oxford Centre for Animal Ethics and Board Member of the Nonhuman Rights Project. He currently supervises PhD students Diego de Guadalupe Romero Rivero and Michael Gold, and actively participates in research centers including the Cambridge Forum for Legal and Political Philosophy and Centre for Public Law.
