Rafe Steinhauer is an Assistant Professor of Engineering at Dartmouth College’s Thayer School of Engineering. His work focuses on applying design methods—such as design thinking and human-centered design—to improve education systems at all levels. He teaches courses including Design Thinking, Design & Education, and Design and Entrepreneurship, emphasizing interdisciplinary approaches to systemic change.
Education:
- BSE in Operations Research and Financial Engineering from Princeton University (2007)
- MBA and MEd in Innovation in Education Reform from the University of Virginia (2015)
His research explores how mindfulness, empathy, and emotional intelligence can enhance design education. He has published articles on topics like Emotional Intelligence in Design Education and Mindfulness in Design Thinking, advocating for more responsive and human-centered educational models. Rafe is a member of the American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE) and the Future of Design in Higher Education (FDHE) network.
He has received several awards for teaching and service, including the 2018 Commendation for Outstanding Teaching at Princeton and the 2015 C. Stewart Sheppard Service Award at the University of Virginia. His work often bridges academia and practice, such as mentoring student teams that develop tools for sustainable urban planning.
