Rafał Augustyn

Dr hab. Rafał Augustyn is a Professor at the University of Wrocław's Faculty of Philology, teaching courses such as 'Text and Music' and 'Music, Musicality, Theatre'. His academic career includes a habilitation in 2014 and prior teaching at the State University of New York at Stony Brook. He specializes in interdisciplinary studies of arts integration, with a focus on music, literature, and theatre. His research explores modernist artistic affinities, contemporary musical theatre, and the interplay between different art forms.

Augustyn's scholarly work includes over 150 publications, primarily in Odra and Ruch Muzyczny, covering music criticism, festival analysis, and theoretical studies. His compositions have been performed internationally, and he directed festivals like Musica Polonica Nova. He received three nominations for the Fryderyk 2011 Award and the Wrocław Music Award for his monographic album Do ut des.

As a cultural figure, he served as president of the Wrocław Branch of the Polish Composers' Union and contributed to radio and TV programs like Klasyk, nasz blisko. His translation of Charles Rosen's The Classical Style (2014) revitalized musicological discourse. His research also encompasses Polish avant-garde adaptations in opera, cultural nationalism in music, and the role of music in historical contexts.

Augustyn’s advisory roles include collaborations with prominent theatre directors and his work as a music consultant. His grants and projects highlight interdisciplinary approaches, blending philological traditions with modern cultural studies.

He leads research in the Institute of Polish Philology, emphasizing cultural studies and the intersection of music with other disciplines. His lab focuses on performance studies and the evolution of musical theatre, with ongoing projects exploring 20th-century Polish music heritage and digital archiving of avant-garde works.
