Rafael Popper-Keizer serves as an Applied Instructor of Cello at the Adams School of Music and the Arts, holding a B.A. from the University of California at Santa Cruz and M.M./Artist Diploma from the New England Conservatory.
His educational background includes studies with Laurence Lesser at NEC, Yo-Yo Ma's understudy role at Tanglewood Music Center under Seiji Ozawa, and instruction from Stephen Harrison (Stanford University) and Karen Andrie (UC Santa Cruz).
Mr. Popper-Keizer maintains a remarkably diverse performance career spanning:
- Principal cellist positions with Boston Modern Orchestra Project and Boston Philharmonic Orchestra
- Core membership in Emmanuel Music, Chameleon Arts Ensemble, Winsor Music, Ibis Camerata, and Monadnock Music
- Solo recitals at Jordan Hall and Phillips Collection featuring works by Saint-Saëns, Beethoven, and Dvorak
- Genre-spanning expertise from 17th-century continuo to avant-garde improvisation and indie rock collaborations
His performance interests reflect exceptional versatility across historical periods and collaborative contexts, with particular recognition for "melodic phrasing of melting tenderness" (The Boston Globe) and "dazzling dispatch of every bravura challenge." International engagements include tours with CORE Ensemble at Ukraine's "Contrasts" festival, while recording projects feature premieres of 20th/21st-century works by Erickson, Bielawa, and Schuller.
He maintains active collaborations with Borromeo/Muir String Quartets, Museum of Fine Arts Trio, Curtis Macomber, and Eugenia Zuckerman across major New England venues including Rockport Chamber Music Festival and Token Creek Festival.
