Rafael Paulino

Dr Rafael Paulino is an Associate Lecturer in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at UNSW Sydney and the Program Manager of the Nuisance and Harmful Algae Science-Practice Partnership (NHASP).

• PhD in Chemical Engineering from UNSW
• MSc in Civil Engineering from University of British Columbia (Canada)
• BSc in Civil Engineering from Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte (Brazil)

His research focuses on applied solutions to current and emerging challenges in the water industry, including:

• Microbial interactions in environmental water: Understanding microbiomes' roles and interactions, their impact on water quality and treatability, molecular techniques, and antimicrobial resistance.
• Data-driven modelling and remote sensing: Using machine learning for optimizing drinking water treatment and satellite monitoring of urban/rural waterbodies, grounded in mechanistic understanding.
• Environmental water management strategies: Developing sustainable solutions through water-sensitive urban design and environmentally friendly technologies.

He teaches the course CVEN9886 and collaborates with NHASP to integrate academic research with industry practices.
