Rafael Moreno

Rafael Moreno is an Associate Professor in the Department of Geography & Environmental Sciences at the University of Colorado Denver. His expertise spans Geographic Information Science and Technology (GIScience), Open Source Software for Geospatial Applications (FOSS4G), Natural Resources Management, and Sustainable Development, with a focus on Latin America.

• B.S. in Forestry from Universidad Autónoma Chapingo (1982)
• M.S. and Ph.D. in Natural Resources Management from Colorado State University (1987, 1992)

His research focuses on forest fragmentation analysis, anthropogenic pressure on ecosystems, and Decision Support Systems for sustainable forest management. He pioneered the use of FOSS4G in web-based spatial information systems, emphasizing open standards and cross-border collaboration.

Recent publications highlight trends in forest conservation, land use/cover mapping, and FOSS4G applications. He has advised students on topics including forest fragmentation in Mexico and geospatial open-source solutions.
