Dr Rafael Mitchell is a Senior Lecturer in Education at the University of Bristol's School of Education. He holds a PhD, MA, and PGCE, specializing in global education policy and African education systems. His research focuses on decolonial methodologies, equity in international partnerships, and teacher professional development in low-resource contexts. Mitchell is a core contributor to the Transforming Education for Sustainable Futures (TESF) initiative and the African Education Research Database, aiming to elevate African scholarship and address systemic inequities in education research and policy.
His work critically examines issues such as Black teachers' experiences in UK schools, crisis management in education systems, and inclusive education practices. Mitchell advocates for endogenous leadership models that prioritize local knowledge and participatory approaches. He has published extensively on global South-North research partnerships, ethical funding practices, and curriculum decolonization. Mitchell collaborates with institutions across Africa, including Ethiopia, Sierra Leone, and Botswana, to ensure research relevance to marginalized communities.
