Rafael Grohmann is Assistant Professor of Media Studies at University of Toronto Scarborough, with a cross-appointment at the Faculty of Information. He directs the DigiLabour Initiative and researches digital labor, platform cooperativism, and workers' organizing. His work examines how data work shapes social media and media industries, with focus on holding tech companies accountable.
Research bridges critical platform studies and labor movements, analyzing click farms, delivery platforms, and worker-owned cooperatives in Latin America. Current projects investigate fair work in platform economies and the impact of AI on labor conditions.
Professor Grohmann collaborates internationally with Fairwork AI, mapping global AI production networks. He serves on editorial boards of Big Data & Society and Work, Employment and Society, and co-founded the Labor Tech Research Network. His participatory methodology combines action research with critical theory.
