Rafael Calvo is a Professor at the Dyson School of Design Engineering, Imperial College London, and serves as Director of Community Engagement and Outreach. His research focuses on AI-driven solutions for healthcare, education, and wellbeing, emphasizing ethical design. He holds a PhD in Intelligent Document and Web Page Classification from the Universidad Nacional de Rosario (2000) and a Graduate Certificate in Higher Education from the University of Sydney (2005). His work spans over 250 papers and 3 books, including Positive Computing (MIT Press).
Key affiliations include the Leverhulme Centre for the Future of Intelligence and the Institute for Digital Molecular Design and Fabrication (DigiFAB). Notable projects include the HeadGear mental health app (largest RCT workplace mental health app) and the EQ Clinic, an AI tool for medical student empathy training. He is an IEEE Transactions on Technology and Society Co-Editor and Fellow of the Australian Research Council.
Research interests bridge AI ethics, health technology, and human-centered design. His work addresses challenges like dementia care in Peru, workplace mental health, and AI’s societal impact. Awards include the ARC Fellowship. He actively engages in global health initiatives and technology policy debates.
