Rafael Almeida da Matta is a Professor of Finance at SKEMA Business School (France), previously serving as Associate Professor (2018–2023) and Assistant Professor at the University of Amsterdam (2012–2018). He holds a PhD in Economics from the University of Illinois (2012) as a Fulbright scholar, with prior degrees from Federal University of Minas Gerais (MA 2006, BA 2003).
His research focuses on financial contracting frictions, bankruptcy laws, monetary policy transmission, and systemic risk. Key areas include creditor protection mechanisms, debt renegotiation dynamics, and the impact of regulatory frameworks on financial stability. His work has influenced policy bodies like the U.S. SEC and European Central Bank, and is published in leading journals such as Review of Financial Studies and Management Science.
As an Associate Editor for the International Review of Law and Economics, he reviews for top journals including Journal of Financial Economics and Journal of Banking and Finance. His recent work explores short selling’s competitive effects, QE’s corporate bond lending channel, and union-driven shareholder proposals’ impact on capital structure.
Awarded prestigious venues like the American Finance Association annual meetings, his research bridges finance, law, and macroeconomics. Current affiliations include SKEMA’s Finance & Accounting research center in Sophia Antipolis, France.
