Rafael A. Fajardo is a Professor and Undergraduate Director of Emergent Digital Practices at the University of Denver’s College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences. He leads the SWEAT collaborative, pioneering socially conscious games. His work merges design, art, and technology to explore interactive experiences, with a focus on cultural critique and education.
Education: MFA in Graphic Design (Rhode Island School of Design, 1993), BA/BFA in Studio Art/Design (University of Texas at Austin, 1990). Research interests include design pedagogy, ludology, and semiotics. His projects have secured over $1M in grants from NSF, NEH, and others.
Key exhibitions include ReVisión (Denver Art Museum, 2021), In Kepler’s Gardens (2020), and Crossings (Emmanuel Gallery, 2017). Awards include I.D. Magazine’s Top 50 Designers (2004). He serves on boards for Games for Change and the International Digital Media & Arts Association.
Advising focuses on game design and critical theory. Current initiatives include a Gabriel García Márquez-inspired game and letterpress chapbook projects. His interdisciplinary work bridges art, engineering, and humanities, emphasizing community-engaged practices.
