Rae M. Robertson Anderson is a Professor of Physics and Biophysics and Associate Provost at the University of San Diego. She holds a BS in Physics from Georgetown University (2003) and a PhD in Physics from UC San Diego (2007), supported by NSF and Clare Boothe Luce scholarships. Her postdoctoral work at The Scripps Research Institute focused on HIV regulatory proteins using single-molecule microscopy. She joined USD in 2009, pioneering interdisciplinary research in biopolymer mechanics and soft matter physics. Her lab develops novel optical tweezers and fluorescence microscopy techniques to study non-equilibrium systems, attracting over $3.5M in grants including NSF CAREER and Air Force awards.
Research Focus: Her work bridges physics and biology, addressing molecular-scale mechanics in biopolymer networks. Recent innovations include engineered biopolymer systems to model cellular environments and active matter dynamics. She emphasizes undergraduate research, co-founding USD's nationally recognized Biophysics Major and mentoring 14 undergraduate co-authors. Her students have won Goldwater Scholarships and NSF fellowships.
