Dr. Radu Popescu is a Lecturer in the Department of Architectural Engineering (ARCE) at California Polytechnic State University (Cal Poly), part of the College of Architecture and Environmental Design (CAED). His expertise spans geotechnical engineering, seismic analysis, probabilistic mechanics, and structural engineering.
Education:
- Ph.D. in Civil Engineering & Operations Research, Princeton University
- Ph.D. in Hydraulic Structures, Technical University of Civil Engineering, Bucharest, Romania
- M.A. in Civil Engineering & Operations Research, Princeton University
- B.S. in Hydraulic Structures, Technical University of Civil Engineering, Bucharest, Romania
Research Interests: His work focuses on soil-structure interaction, seismic liquefaction mitigation, offshore anchor systems, and probabilistic modeling. He has conducted extensive studies on heterogeneous soil behavior, centrifuge modeling, and pipeline integrity under dynamic loads.
Publications: His 50+ publications reflect expertise in geotechnical hazards, numerical modeling, and experimental validation. Recent work includes seismic liquefaction mechanisms in heterogeneous soils and centrifuge studies on LNAPL migration.
Licenses: Licensed as a Professional Engineer (PE) in Wisconsin, Alberta, and Newfoundland & Labrador (Canada).
Labs/Infrastructure: Associated with Cal Poly's ARCE facilities including the Degenkolb Graduate Lab, Seismic Lab, and High Bay Laboratory, supporting hands-on research in structural behavior and experimental testing.
