Rachel Whitsed is an Associate Professor and Head of School at the School of Environmental Sciences, part of Charles Sturt University's Science and Health faculty. Her expertise lies in spatial sciences, particularly spatial environmental, health, and social modelling. She holds a PhD from Curtin University (2004), an MSc from Victoria University of Wellington (1998), and a Bachelor’s from the University of Waikato (1994). Her research focuses on spatial algorithms, uncertainty in GIS, and precision agriculture applications in developing regions. She has contributed to UN Sustainable Development Goals related to education and environmental sustainability.
- External Roles: Member of Australian College of Environmental Deans and Directors (ACEDD), Australasian Spatial Information Education and Research Association (ASIERA).
- Key Projects: Developed spatial decision support systems for crop selection in tropical environments, and conducted studies on wilderness navigation and search-and-rescue modelling.
Her recent work includes analyzing post-bushfire telehealth services, spatial impacts of disasters on child resilience, and improving walkability for older residents in regional towns. She has supervised three research students and received the 2017 Best Rural Public/Population Health Research Presentation award.
