Rachel Wetts is the Acacia Assistant Professor of Environment and Society and Sociology at Brown University, affiliated with the Institute at Brown for Environment and Society. She holds a PhD from the University of California-Berkeley (2019) and a BA from Yale University (2006).
Her research focuses on political sociology, environmental sociology, and race/ethnicity, examining how cultural processes and social psychology interact with power structures to shape American politics. Key areas include white racial resentment and climate change inaction. She investigates elite-public interactions influencing societal responses to climate change and racial dynamics.
Notable awards include the 2023 Dean’s Award for Excellence in Teaching. She secured a Russell Sage Foundation grant (2024) for researching 'Climate Politics as Status Politics.'
Teaching includes courses like ENVS 1823 (Climate Media, Discourse, and Power), SOC 0300 (Organizations and Society), and computational methods for social scientists. Her work appears in journals such as the American Journal of Sociology and Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
