Rachel McQueen, PhD, is a Professor in the Department of Human Ecology at the University of Alberta, affiliated with the Faculty of Agricultural, Life and Environmental Sciences. Her research focuses on textile odor development, clothing comfort, and sustainability in the textile industry. She teaches courses such as HECOL 170 (Textiles), HECOL 472/572 (Environmental Sustainability in Textiles), and Professional Seminars for graduate students.
Her work examines odor retention mechanisms in textiles, microbial interactions, and odor-control technologies. Recent studies include laundry frequency reduction to prolong garment lifespan and consumer behaviors affecting clothing disposal. She advises six graduate students and collaborates on interdisciplinary projects involving material science, environmental policy, and consumer psychology.
Key research themes include circular economy strategies, textile lifecycle impacts, and odor management innovations. Publications span 20+ years with a focus on advancing sustainable textile practices and consumer engagement in eco-friendly choices.
