Dr. Rachel Marsden is a Senior Lecturer in Academic Practice at the University of the Arts London (UAL), specializing in practice-based research, inclusive pedagogies, and ethics of care. She serves as Research Training Manager for UAL’s Research Network for Doctoral Students (RNUAL), overseeing PhD supervision across all UAL colleges. Her work integrates creative health, social prescribing, and disability justice, informed by her curatorial and academic expertise.
Her research focuses on transcultural curatorial practices in China and the Asia-Pacific, stemming from her PhD in 'The Transcultural Curator: Translating Networked Curatorial Practices in the Chinese Context since 1980' from UAL’s Centre for Chinese Visual Arts (CCVA). She is an investigator on the international project Stomach Ache: Art and the Gastrointestinal System, and contributes to UAL’s Health, Arts and Design (HEARD) research hub. Additionally, she leads the Culture, Health and Wellbeing Alliance (CHWA) as a Regional Champion and is a member of the International Association of Arts Critics (AICA).
Marsden’s career spans curation, education, and arts writing across the UK, USA, China, and Australia, bridging Higher Education, the voluntary sector, and contemporary arts.
