Rachel Lotan is Professor Emerita of Education at the Stanford Graduate School of Education (GSE). She previously served as Director of the Stanford Teacher Education Program (STEP) and currently leads the Program for Complex Instruction, promoting equitable classroom practices globally. Her research focuses on teaching strategies for academically and linguistically diverse classrooms, teacher education, and curriculum development. Dr. Lotan holds a PhD from Stanford University, alongside MA degrees in Sociology and Education, and a BA in English Linguistics and French from Tel Aviv University.
Her academic career includes roles such as Acting Assistant Professor (1986–1987), Associate Professor (1999–2006), and Professor (2006–2014) at Stanford GSE. She has contributed to international educational initiatives, including the Programa de Educação Docente Brasil. Her work emphasizes Complex Instruction, a pedagogical framework addressing status dynamics and equity in diverse classrooms.
Notable awards include the Doctor Honoris Causa from the University of Miskolc (2022). Her publications span books like Designing Groupwork: Strategies for Heterogeneous Classrooms (2014) and articles on climate change education and cooperative learning. She advises doctoral students and has shaped policies through contributions like the Instructional Leadership Corps, fostering teacher-led professional learning.
