Rachel Lienesch is a Research Fellow in the Center for the Study of Democratic Institutions at Vanderbilt University, holding the rank of Research Fellow. Her work focuses on how identity and identity threats influence political behavior and public opinion, with a particular emphasis on race, partisanship, and their intersections.
- Educational Background: Ph.D. in Political Science from Stanford University (2023), B.A. in Government with Sociology minor from The College of William and Mary (graduated with honors).
Her research employs mixed methods, including surveys, experiments, and archival analysis. A central project explores how White Democrats navigate conflicts between racial and partisan identities, revealing that racial identity can override partisanship under strong threat. This framework applies broadly to identity conflicts across groups.
Her work is forthcoming in the American Political Science Review. Additional projects examine racial context effects on political attitudes and the impact of partisan disagreement on marital dissolution.
