Dr. Rachel L. Smith is a Professor in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at Appalachian State University and an Adjunct Professor at UNC Chapel Hill. She directs the Astronomy & Astrophysics Research Laboratory (AARL) and serves as Curator of Meteorites at the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences. Her research bridges observational astronomy, cosmochemistry, and astrobiology, with a focus on understanding planet formation through high-resolution spectroscopy of young stellar systems.
Her key research interests include:
- Isotope chemistry in protoplanetary disks
- Solar system formation analogs
- Origin of prebiotic compounds
- Astrobiology and life in the universe
Dr. Smith has received significant scientific recognition, including:
- The Gordon A. McKay Award (Meteoritical Society, 2010)
- Chambliss Astronomy Achievement Award (AAS, 2009)
- Career Development Award (Lunar and Planetary Institute, 2009)
- 100 Scholars Research Award (2025)
She actively mentors undergraduates through summer research internships and teaches specialized courses in astrobiology and star formation. Her lab develops public outreach tools like OpenSpace—a NASA-funded interactive universe visualization platform.
