Rachel L. Einwohner is a Professor of Sociology and Courtesy Professor of Political Science at Purdue University. Her expertise lies in political sociology, social movements, qualitative methods, and gender studies. She holds a Ph.D. from the University of Washington (1997), an M.A. (1991), and a B.A. (1988) from the University of Pennsylvania.
Her research investigates protest dynamics, resistance under oppressive regimes, and gendered aspects of activism. Notable studies include Jewish resistance during the Holocaust, the anti-sweatshop movement, and contemporary social movements using Twitter data. She has authored Hope and Honor: Jewish Resistance during the Holocaust (2022) and co-edited volumes such as The Oxford Handbook of U.S. Women's Social Movement Activism (2017).
Einwohner's work has been funded by the NSF and NEH. She teaches courses on research methods, protest sociology, and teaching pedagogy. She previously chaired the American Sociological Association’s Collective Behavior and Social Movements section.
Her recent research explores intersectional solidarity in movements like Black Lives Matter and digital activism strategies. She collaborates with interdisciplinary teams analyzing social media’s role in modern movements.
