Rachel Ellis is an Associate Professor at Linköping University, affiliated with the Department of Behavioural Sciences and Learning (IBL) and the Disability Research Division (FUSA). Her research focuses on cognition and speech perception in aging populations with hearing loss, exploring cognitive abilities like working memory and executive functions. She investigates the interplay between aging, hearing impairment, and communication technologies like hearing aids.
Her work spans three core areas: 1) Cognition and speech perception (e.g., proactive interference in speech recognition), 2) Technological solutions for communication difficulties (e.g., hearing aid signal processing), and 3) Social interaction dynamics in communication (e.g., stigmatization of hearing aids). Recent studies address how age and hearing impairment affect conversational strategies and speech recognition in noise.
Dr. Ellis has published extensively on topics such as temporal fine structure processing, cognitive predictors of speech recognition, and pragmatic language skills in cochlear implant users. Her research integrates experimental psychology, audiology, and assistive technology to improve communication accessibility for older adults and hearing-impaired populations.
She collaborates with the Swedish Institute for Disability Research and leads projects at the Linnaeus Centre HEAD. Her work emphasizes translational research, bridging cognitive science insights with clinical audiological practice.
