Rachel E. Kranton is the James B. Duke Professor of Economics at Duke University, affiliated with the Trinity College of Arts & Sciences. She holds a Ph.D. in Economics from the University of California, Berkeley (1993). Her research focuses on how social institutions, identity, and networks shape economic outcomes, spanning microeconomics, development, and industrial organization.
Key roles include serving as Dean of Social Sciences at Duke (2018–2022), Editorial Board member of the American Economic Review and Journal of Economic Literature, and Managing Editor of the Economic Journal. She co-founded the Economic Research on Identity, Norms, and Narratives (ERINN) network.
Awardees of prestigious honors, Kranton is a National Academy of Sciences member, American Academy of Arts and Sciences member, and recipient of the Chaire Blaise Pascal. She has held fellowships at the Russell Sage Foundation and the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton.
