Rachel D. Ramsey is an Associate Professor of English at Assumption College, affiliated with the D’Amour College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. She holds a Ph.D. in English from West Virginia University (2001), an M.A. from the same institution (1996), and a B.A. in English from West Virginia Wesleyan College (1993). Her research focuses on 18th-century literature, early modern urbanization, and the interplay between architecture and cultural narratives.
Her work explores topics such as London’s social and physical transformation, material culture (e.g., windows, luxury goods), and the literary reinterpretation of historical spaces. Notable projects include analyses of Thomas Coram’s Foundling Hospital, John Stow’s urban surveys, and the symbolism of architectural features like sash windows. Her presentations and publications frequently bridge literary analysis with historical and cultural contexts.
Ramsey has received a Faculty Development Grant (2007) to study early modern trade networks via the Royal Exchange’s literary history. Her grants and awards reflect her commitment to interdisciplinary scholarship. She has presented at international conferences like the British Society for Eighteenth-Century Studies and the American Society for Eighteenth-Century Studies, emphasizing themes such as crime narratives tied to architectural changes and early modern conceptions of charity.
