Rachel Carter is a Senior Lecturer in Film Production at De Montfort University (DMU), based in the Leicester Media School. She serves as Programme Leader for the MA International Film Production and is the DMU Academic Lead for the MA Filmmaking with Raindance, a collaborative program delivered by Raindance Film LLP. Rachel is also an External Examiner for the BA Film Production at Salford University and a peer reviewer for Performance Matters (Simon Fraser University).

Rachel's research focuses on UK cinema exhibition culture during the silent era and World War I, with a particular emphasis on women working in producing, script editing, and production design roles. She is also deeply engaged in the craft of film producing and the creative development process for emerging talent seeking to enter the film industry. Her academic work is supported by her extensive industry experience and affiliation with the Cinema and Television History Institute (CATHI).
Rachel has made significant contributions to film education and practice. She has been recognized with several honors, including:
- Royal Television Society Award for Production Craft as a Producer (2009)
- Royal Television Society Award for Best Short Film (2009, Midlands)
- Coventry University Teaching Excellence Award (2015)
- Elected Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts (2011)
Rachel has over ten years of professional experience as a film producer, having run an award-winning production company and worked as a freelancer for clients such as the BFI, Creative England, and Tiger Aspect Productions. She has secured multiple film commissions from the UK Film Council and co-produced a feature film with a BAFTA-nominated director. She has also worked as a script reader and consultant, trained with the BBC in producing, and with The Script Factory in script development. She began her academic career as a Guest Lecturer at Warwick University before joining DMU full-time. She currently teaches across MA-level programs in film production and script development.
Rachel is actively involved in academic service, serving as an External Examiner and peer reviewer, and contributes to curriculum development and educational innovation through her consultancy and partnership roles.
