Dr. Rachael Wiseman is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Philosophy at the University of Liverpool where she serves as co-Director of Post-Graduate Studies, department Environment lead, and Communications officer. She co-directs Women In Parenthesis with Dr. Clare MacCumhaill of Durham University and holds executive committee positions with the Royal Institute of Philosophy, the British Society for the History of Philosophy, and the Society for the Study of the History of Analytic Philosophy. Wiseman also serves as associate editor for early analytic philosophy for the British Journal for the History of Philosophy and section editor for 20th Century Philosophy for De Gruyter's Works of Philosophy and Their Reception.
Her research focuses on the intersection of philosophy of mind, action, and ethics within the history of analytic philosophy. Wiseman has published extensively on Ludwig Wittgenstein, G.E.M. Anscombe, and the 'Wartime Quartet' (Anscombe, Philippa Foot, Mary Midgley, and Iris Murdoch), exploring concepts including intention, practical knowledge, practical truth, the first-person perspective, self-knowledge, pleasure, goodness, and reason. She maintains a particular interest in Wittgenstein's methodology, the first-person, and dreaming.
Wiseman's scholarly output reveals a consistent trajectory in 20th century analytic philosophy with significant contributions to understanding the 'Wartime Quartet.' Her publications span metaphysics, ethics, philosophy of mind, and action theory, with increasing emphasis on recovering women's contributions to philosophical history. The 2022 publication of Metaphysical Animals: How Four Women Brought Philosophy Back to Life represents a landmark interdisciplinary contribution that bridges intellectual history and feminist philosophy.
Her major scholarly recognition includes:
- Winner of the HWA Non-Fiction Crown (2022)
- Irish Times Book of the Year (2022)
- New York Times Book Review Notable Book (2022)
- National Book Critics Circle Award Finalist (2022)
Wiseman actively supervises PhD students and welcomes inquiries from potential students interested in the 'Wartime Quartet,' Wittgenstein's later philosophy, or philosophy of mind, action, and ethics. She secured AHRC funding for the PAGE project (Perception, Action and the Genesis of Everyday Ethics) examining the philosophy of Anscombe, Foot, Midgley, and Murdoch from 2019-2023.
Through Women In Parenthesis, Wiseman collaborates with MacCumhaill to study the philosophical contributions of the 'Wartime Quartet' while addressing systemic gender disparities in academic philosophy. This initiative has generated influential publications and fostered important discussions about representation in the field.
