Dr. Rachael Elward is a Senior Lecturer and Course Leader for the Psychology BSc (Hons) program. She specializes in the cognitive neuroscience of learning and memory, focusing on developmental amnesia, memory precision across lifespan, and neural correlates of memory. As co-lead of the Brain, Mind, and Behaviour Research Group (BMBG), she advances interdisciplinary research in cognitive neuroscience and psychology. She holds an honorary lectureship at UCL Great Ormond Street Institute of Child Health and collaborates with institutions like the University of Cambridge and the Centre for Vital Longevity (Dallas). Her research employs techniques such as fMRI, EEG, and eye-tracking to understand memory systems and support educational strategies for children with memory disorders.
Her work spans three core areas: improving educational support for children with developmental amnesia, studying memory precision in developmental contexts, and investigating neural mechanisms underlying memory through advanced neuroimaging. Recent publications highlight her contributions to pedagogical methods in psychology education, semantic learning in developmental amnesia, and age-related changes in episodic memory retrieval.
Dr. Elward’s outreach includes science communication via The Conversation (republished by Wired and Scientific American), a Wellcome Trust-funded theatre project on brain injury, and media interviews on children’s memory. She is a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and actively contributes to professional societies like the British Neuropsychological Society.
