Dr. Rachael Chapman is a part-time Senior Lecturer in the Department of Social Sciences and Languages at Northumbria University since March 2010. Previously, she held roles as Senior Research Fellow at Warwick Business School and De Montfort University, and research officer at Leeds Metropolitan University. Her research focuses on governance, participation, democratic transitions, and forest schools, with a particular emphasis on urban green spaces and environmental policy.
Rachael holds a PhD in Politics from the University of Sheffield (2005), an MA Public Policy (distinction) from the University of Sheffield (2002), and a BA (Hons) (1997). She received the Bethan Reeves Memorial Prize for academic excellence during her MA.
Her research interests include governance partnerships between government and third sectors, community participation in policy processes, democratic accountability in urban governance, and the educational benefits of Forest Schools. Current projects explore democratic transitions in urban green spaces (Newcastle case study) and Forest Schools' alignment with education frameworks and Biesta’s educational purpose model.
Rachael has published over 11 peer-reviewed articles in high-impact journals like Governance and Public Administration, addressing themes such as faith-based engagement, multilevel governance, and EU policy implementation. Key works include studies on faith groups in urban governance, austerity-era local government creativity, and the role of Forest Schools in education.
Collaborative projects involve York University on Forest School research and practitioners on urban green space governance. She teaches courses like Theories and Practices of Democracy and Postgraduate Dissertation, emphasizing interdisciplinary approaches to political and social issues.
