RALPH KEELING

Ralph Keeling is a Professor at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, UC San Diego, specializing in atmospheric chemistry and climate sciences. His roles include leading the Scripps CO2 and O2 Programs, which conduct long-term measurements of atmospheric gases. He holds a B.S. from Yale University and a Ph.D. from Harvard University.

Research interests focus on global carbon cycle dynamics, ocean-atmosphere interactions, and past climate change. Key areas include measuring atmospheric oxygen variations, quantifying carbon sinks, and detecting ocean heat storage through atmospheric tracers.

Recent work emphasizes Southern Ocean CO2 uptake, seasonal CO2 amplitude trends, and the impact of industrial activity on atmospheric helium. His research integrates airborne observations, remote sensing data, and climate models to improve understanding of carbon fluxes and climate feedback mechanisms.

Keeling collaborates on global initiatives like the Atmospheric Tomography (ATom) mission and contributes to the Global Carbon Budget reports. His lab develops advanced measurement techniques, such as pressure-stabilized gas spectrometry and mass-weighted isentropic coordinates for atmospheric data analysis.
