Dr. R.V. Krishnamurthy is a Professor of Stable Isotope Geochemistry at Western Michigan University, where he leads the Stable Isotope Laboratory. His work focuses on environmental and geochemical problem-solving using stable isotopes of carbon, oxygen, and hydrogen, with applications in paleoclimate reconstruction, groundwater-surface water interactions, and contaminant tracking.
- Education: Ph.D. in 1984 from the Physical Research Laboratory, Ahmedabad; M.S. (1974) and B.S. (1970) from Utkal University
Research interests span paleoclimatology, carbon cycling in freshwater systems, and geochemical fate of contaminants. His team pioneered hydrogen isotope analysis in sedimentary organic matter and developed techniques for dissolved organic carbon extraction and carbonate analysis.
Recent publications (2018–2025) highlight interdisciplinary applications of stable isotopes in:
- Climate dynamics (Great Lakes, Sahara)
- Hydrological processes (Egyptian aquifers, irrigation loss)
- Contamination studies (mercury from mining, hydrocarbon pollution)
- Novel isotopic methodologies (micropore transport, icicle formation)
His laboratory serves as a hub for isotopic research and education, with a legacy of methodological innovation and global fieldwork in regions like Egypt, the Great Lakes, and the Arctic.
