R. Tyler Priest is an Associate Professor at the University of Iowa, jointly appointed in the Department of History and the Department of Geographical and Sustainability Sciences. His scholarship focuses on the history of offshore oil and gas, energy policy, and environmental history.
- Education: PhD in History from the University of Wisconsin-Madison (1996)
- Previous Affiliation: Director of Global Studies at the C.T. Bauer College of Business, University of Houston (2004–2012)
His research explores the technological evolution of offshore drilling, labor dynamics in energy sectors, and environmental consequences of hydrocarbon extraction. He has documented over 700 oral histories of the Gulf Coast offshore industry and served as a senior policy analyst on the BP Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill Commission (2010). Publications include prize-winning works like The Offshore Imperative (2007) and co-edited Journal of American History special issues on oil (2012).
