R. Blakeslee Gilpin is Associate Professor and Director of Graduate Studies in History at Tulane University. His research examines slavery's legacies in American culture, focusing on the rhetoric of equality and intersections of race and violence. Awarded the 2010 C. Vann Woodward Prize for his Yale doctoral dissertation, he authored the critically acclaimed book John Brown Still Lives!: America's Long Reckoning With Violence, Equality, and Change.
His scholarly works have appeared in The New York Review of Books, The Paris Review, and Harper's Magazine. Current projects include a biography of William Styron and a manuscript exploring Nat Turner's legacy in America's racial imagination.
